Discussion Questions for
Driving on the Wrong Side of the
Road
- Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road is a
metaphor for how the author says she’s lived most of her life. What do you
think she means by this? When have you veered from a traditional path to get
to your intended destination?
- How does Diana use humor to encourage tolerance of
both sexes? In “Spousal Arousal,” despite her frustrations, she never
mentioned sleeping in a different bedroom from her husband. Under similar
conditions, would you have moved to another room? Why or why not?
- In “Clean Fridge Can Raise Suspicions,” Diana
suggests that your refrigerator’s contents reveal your cooking talents. Do
you agree?
- Diana reinforces the belief that perfection is an
unattainable goal. She’s often striving for ideal outcomes yet foiled by
greater forces. Which essay best demonstrates this? What about that story
amused you the most?
- In “Massage: A Touchy Subject” Diana admits to being
massage phobic. Does this resonate with any of you? Do you prefer a male or
female masseuse?
- What do you think the cactus in “Prior Wife: The Final
Victory” represented to Diana? Why was it so important that this plastic
plant be discarded? Would you have felt the same way?
- “A Deck of a Time” explains what finally drove Diana
to wield an electric drill. Many of us allow childhood instructions (that
once were beneficial but are no longer relevant) to limit our adult
experiences. What earlier messages that you received discourage you from
attempting new endeavors?
- The section “On the Backstretch” deals with aging,
empty nests, and suitable fashions for the fifty-plus woman. Do you agree or
disagree that blue jeans are one type of apparel that can be worn at any
age? Diana suggests that “apple fit” jeans with padded knees could one day
become a reality. What additional features would you like to add to your
jeans?
- Diana offers a wish list in “What Moms Really Want.”
What would you include to this registry? Why?
- “Christmas Monopoly” takes a hilarious look at how
family dynamics can be challenged by simple board games. Do games have this
kind of effect on your family? Do you think that playing competitive games
brings your family members closer together or drives them further apart?
Discuss.
